Old skates given a new life

My skates are over 35 years old and the insides are crumbling. The leather is in good shape but the blades were rusty and corroded. I sanded all that off the blades and eyelets before painting the leather with a coat of white paint.

Next I added a layer of Jacquard Lumiere Pearl White Metallic paint.

Pearl Turquoise

Sponging Lumiere Pearl Turquoise Metallic acrylic on, being careful not to move any of the masks.

Removing the masks the white shines through.

A little white eyelash yarn sewn on top of the lace added a little more softness.

Masking

Using a paper punch I cut snowflakes of various sizes out of post-it note paper so they could stick to the skates. I scattered them all around the skates.

More layers

Using the papers I had punched the snowflakes from as stencils I sponged on some darker blue ink.

I braided some eyelash yarn in dark blue together and laced them up. Next I hand sewed some lace around the top edge.

Hanging on my back porch

I threaded an organza ribbon through the top eyelets and hung them up together.
